A cold and wet Thursday evening greeted the players and spectators at Stockton for the George Dutton Cup Final. A good sized crowd were then treated to a thrilling game which had all the drama of a Shakespeare tragedy! Khalsa were on the front foot in the first half and had rattled Bishops who seemed off their game. After half an hour the deadlock was broken as Sukhraj Nijjar was fed through and he beat the keeper to give Khalsa the lead. Ten minutes later and Ryan Sahota added a second and four minutes after that Karanjit Sahota added a third just before the half time break. An unusual position with Bishops three down at half time.
Early in the second half, with the rain pouring down Khalsa had Ryan Sahota sent off for a second deliberate hand ball. Down to ten men Khalsa were now under tremendous pressure. Bishops started to dominate and it was only a matter of time before the goals came. But would they come in time! Khalsa held them off until fifteen minutes to go. Up stepped Tom O’Callaghan, coming on as a sub. An unbelievable hat-trick scored with his head in thirteen minutes, and the game was back to all square. Khalsa running out of steam managed to hold on with grim determination and Bishops might even have nicked it right at the end. So it went to penalty kicks.
The sides were all square after five kicks apiece and so to sudden death.
Khalsa score. Bishops score.
Khalsa Score . Bishops miss!
Khalsa win the George Dutton Cup and the celebrations start.
A thrilling game and played in atrocious conditions with the right spirit by both sides. A credit to all .
