Weekly Round-Up - Sunday 3rd March 2024

By Rob Dent

Yet another weekend marred by the weather, but still, a reasonable number of games took place.

George Dutton Cup – Round 1

Pig & Fiddle 0 - 0 Wellesbourne Wanderers
(Wanderers win 2-4 on penalties)

Starting with the cup competitions, a tightly-fought first-round game between Pig & Fiddle and Wellesbourne Wanderers remained goalless, and was eventually settled with penalty kicks. It was Wanderers who held their nerve, and go through to the next round.

Andy Campbell Cup – Round 1

Leamington Hibernian 7 - 2 Real Barston

Hibs sauntered through to the second round at a canter, in charge from the outset. Jack Marsden and Conor Smith ensured Hibs were 2-0 within the first five minutes of the game, with Ashley Kitchen and Josh Tiff striking soon after to give Hibs a commanding 4-0 lead within the opening half-hour. Real then thought they might have a chance of getting back into the game when Ben Valatka pulled one back, but Jack Marsden turned the screw by completing his hat-trick before half-time. 6-1 up going into the break, the second-half was something of a formality. Bruce Gillespie added a goal for Real, before Marsden added his fourth, and Hibs’s seventh.

Cancer Research Supplemental Cup – Preliminary Round

Cubbington FC 4 - 3 Ettington Rovers

Plenty of goals in this tightly-contested game! Cubbington got off to a great start, with first-half goals from Luke Swinnerton, George Wilkinson and Jack Gibson. Tom Gardner got one back for Ettington just before the break, and George Buckingham added a second shortly after the restart. As Ettington strived for an equaliser, Jack Gibson grabbed his second and Cubbington’s fourth to put daylight between the two teams. Ettington weren’t out of it though, and Chris Welsby added their third to set up a tense last 25 minutes. Cubbington held on, and go through to the next round.

Only three league games were able to be played, two of which were in Division 3:

Kenilworth Royal Oak 1 - 2 Napton

Jack Cooper put Royal Oak ahead with a penalty after half an hour, but Aiden Print got Napton back on level terms shortly before half-time. Will Bradbury grabbed the winner on the hour, meaning Napton, with games in hand, keep up the pressure at the top of the table.

Bishops Itchington Reserves 6 - 2 Long Itchington Reserves

The battle of the Reserves sides was a bit of a one-sided contest. Bishops remain top of the table, with a brace from Johnny Adair, and goals for Joel Bennett, William Wall, Joe Williams and Craig Watkin. Long Itchington had Austin Brooks and Elliot Hemming on the score-sheet in the second-half, but it was nowhere near enough, and they remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

Finally, Division 4 also saw another one-sided game.

Massey Ferguson S&SC 8 - 0 Wellesbourne Wanderers Reserves

After Massey’s demolition of Wanderers last week, the reverse fixture was a similar story. Adam Buzzard, Jack Morgan, Connor King and Jack Foster were all on target in the first-half, and the second-half continued in much the same way. Mitchell Statham grabbed a brace, and Michael Parry and Jack King added one more each as Massey cruised to another comfortable victory, and to the top of the league table!
