Cancer Research Supplementary Cup Final

By Rob Dent

Harbury Albion win tightly contested final after penalty shootout.

The second of our Cancer Research Cup finals was again played in sunshine, this time kindly hosted by Stockton FC, with Brian Darby officiating, ably assisted by Kevin Hancock and James Barnwell.

A minute's silence was held in memory of Tracey Thomas - the league, and in particular the Cancer Research Cup competitions, owe a debt of gratitude for all his hard work over so many years.

In a very competitive and fiercely contested final, Khalsa capitalised on early pressure with Gurdeep Dulay breaking the deadlock to take a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

With both sides battling hard in the sunshine and providing entertainment for a decent-sized crowd, Harbury managed to draw level in the second half through a penalty converted by Ed Kostiuk.

After that, nothing could separate the two sides, and the game eventually had to be decided by penalty kicks.

Richard Wingrove held his nerve to settle a tense penalty shootout 4-3, and the cup was duly presented to Harbury Albion.

However, the real winner was Cancer Research, with a healthy crowd raising money for a great cause.
