Goals Galore!

Despite a few games called-off for water-logged pitches, there was a reasonable amount of football, and some high-scoring games, played in the Leamington District on Sunday.

The two finalists for the Tracey Thomas Challenge Cup were decided, as Bishops Itchington cruised past Warwick Cavern with goals from Matt Trinder (2), Rob Herdman, Jason Bradshaw, Josh Turton & Joe Williams to secure their place in the final with a thumping 6-0 victory. Almost as convincing, the current cup holders Westlea Wanderers eased past Long Itchington with a 4-0 victory, looking to secure back-to-back Challenge Cup wins. Their goals came from Michael Ellis, Craig Watkin, Lee Scott & Callum Bell.

Having had the game called off the week before, Leamington Vets eased past Radford Albion into the second round of the George Dutton Cup, with a comfortable 6-2 victory. Ross Jackson hit a hat-trick, Jim Canning added two, and Phil Davies got one, with James Marshall and Sion Humphreys getting the consolation goals for Albion.

Three first round games were played in the Cancer Research Supplementary Cup. Hampton Magna and Kineton matched-up in a closely-contested game – Kineton took an early advantage through Jamie Vadasz within the first 2 minutes, before Magna got back on even terms after 15 minutes through Charlie Woodward. James Keller quickly restored the Kineton lead, and it stayed that way until deep in the second-half. Ashley Turnbull drew Magna level on 75 minutes, only for James Keller to almost immediately grab his second, and the winner for Kineton, as they progressed through to the next round with a narrow 3-2 victory.

Lillington Juniors entertained Harbury Albion, and the top division team proved to have too much for their hosts. Harbury went into the half-time break 2-0 up, with goals from Adam Johnson and Tom O'Callaghan. Ryan Cranton got one back for Juniors, before Lawrie Kendall restores the two-goal cushion on the hour mark. Jordan Bedford got Juniors back into contention with twenty minutes to go, before Tom O'Callaghan added his second, and Albion’s fourth, to secure a 4-2 victory.

The remaining game in this Cup competition made it an even worse day for Lillington Juniors, as their Reserves team faced Liberal Club, fresh from a seven-week break. Tim Dearing quickly put the Liberals ahead after 5 minutes, before Sam Ashford added two more before half-time, then another two in the second-half. Matt Holland inflicted the coup de grâce in the last few minutes to round off a convincing 6-0 victory.

The one game in Division One was a 2-0 win for Khalsa over HRI Wellesbourne, with Narinder Sarai & Tunde Ajibade on the score-sheet.

There was also just the one game in Division Three, but Royal Oak made up for this by putting seven past Grist Mill. Josh Goodwin grabbed a hat-trick, Michael Glover added two, with Wesley Klopper and Matthew Evans grabbing one each. Lewis Christian managed a consolation for Grist Mill as Royal Oak ran out 7-1 winners to maintain the pressure on Lillington Juniors at the top of the league table.

Division Four also saw its share of goals, as Barley Mow trounced Warwick Boar. Ricardo Benjamin grabbed four, Jon Crosthwaite added a brace, with Jarni Walker and Chris Young also getting in on the goals. Adam Coles and Giovanni Turturici each replied for Boar, as they succumbed 8-2.

The biggest score-line of the day, however, was over in Stockton, as Whitnash United made the journey to face Stockton United. Whitnash were in fine form, as Liam Collins (2), Alan Robinson (2), Abhishek Paul (2), Lea Connolly, Dom Pratt and George Whitehead shared out the goals, in a comprehensive 9-0 victory!
